A Cake Story is an original mystery musical that follows a final year friend group as they discover cracks in their friendship when the cake for a surprise birthday party goes missing. As all of them suspect each other to be the culprit, the movie explores how none of them are truly in touch with their friends through personal interrogations told through different genres of song ranging from rap to EDM style party pop. The movie has 13 original songs spanning 4 languages.
Story Overview and My Work
>CO-WROTE and COLLABORATED on the 77 PAGE SCREENPLAY, with 2 other writers.
>WROTE an ensemble cast of 9 characters, giving all of them an unique voice, making sure that they all feel fleshed out.
>CONSTRUCTED a timesheet alongside a map for the entire cast of characters to indicate where they were at any given point of day, in order to build a believable mystery and maintain tension within it.
>In the initial stages of the project, one problem we ran into was that the mystery felt inconsequential. Why care about a missing birthday cake? The stakes felt unbelievable, and there was a gap between what the characters were feeling and what the audience would. In order to fix that, I came up with the solution of the movie being about their friendships in reality. The missing birthday cake became a symptom of a much scarier disease that they now had to face: the fact that none of the characters were truly friends with each other anymore.
>What resulted was a movie about drifting apart, managing friendships in an university setting, and what it truly means to be a friend.
